Referral website, not the contractor. How it works
Cable, roller and track problems in Corpus Christi usually trace to rust, a bump from a car, or wind or water from a storm. A loose cable or crooked door needs a technician.
Corpus Garage Door is a referral website, not a garage door company. We send your request to one independent local garage door company. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. To get help with a crooked or off-track door, send a request with the form.
Door hanging crooked, stuck open, or a car trapped inside? Don't run the opener and don't pull the red release. Keep people and pets clear, and send a request with the form.
How the parts work together
The springs store the energy that lifts the door. The lift cables carry that force from the spring drums down to the bottom brackets at each lower corner. Rollers on short stems ride inside the tracks that curve from the wall to the ceiling. If any link fails, the door can twist, jam or drop on one side.
That's why DASMA's homeowner tips treat cables and bottom brackets as technician-only parts: they are "under extreme tension" because they connect to the springs.
Signs of trouble
Cables - Rust stains, broken strands or a "hairy" look where the cable wraps the drum - One side of the door rising before the other - A cable hanging slack or unwound from the drum
Rollers - Grinding, squealing or a door that shudders as it moves - Rollers wobbling on bent stems, or cracked plastic and nylon wheels - Rust on the bearings, which makes them drag instead of spin
Tracks - A dent or kink where the car or a mower hit it - Track pulling away from the wall, or loose brackets and bolts - Rollers that have jumped out of the track, leaving the door crooked
Why the coast is hard on these parts
Rust. FEMA's coastal corrosion bulletin, which the City of Corpus Christi posts for builders, says salt spray is heaviest within 300 to 3,000 feet of the shoreline, that faster corrosion has been measured as far as 5 to 10 miles inland, and that humidity keeps metal damp longer. Lift cables are thin twisted steel under constant load, so rust there matters more than rust on a panel. Roller bearings are small and open to the air, so they corrode and start dragging, which puts more load on the opener and springs.
Wind. A door that's open or half open in a gust can be pushed out of its tracks. Hurricane Hanna's 2020 landfall on Padre Island brought a 57-knot gust (about 66 mph) at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Salt water. When Harvey came ashore in 2017, NOAA's storm records note storm tides of 4 to 6 feet affecting homes on Padre Island from the Laguna Madre. If water reached your garage, the bottom of the door took a salt-water soak. The bottom brackets, the lower ends of the cables and the lowest rollers sit right there. Even if the door still runs, ask for those parts to be checked.
What to do right now
- Stop using the door. Running the opener on an off-track door can bend the sections or snap a cable.
- Leave it where it is. Raynor Door Company, a Chicago-area installer, warns that closing an off-track door can jam it harder or bring it down unevenly.
- Keep people, pets and cars clear of the opening.
- Don't touch the cables, drums or bottom brackets. DASMA says these belong to a trained technician.
- Take photos from inside if you can do so safely. They help the company bring the right parts, and help with an insurance claim if a storm or a vehicle caused it.
How the repair usually goes
The technician secures the door, releases spring tension if needed, and works out what failed. A simple realignment can be quick; Raynor says a straightforward one often takes about an hour. Bent track sections get straightened or replaced, worn rollers swapped, and frayed cables replaced. Then the springs are re-tensioned, the door is balanced, and the opener's limits and safety-reverse are checked. If a section was bent, it may need replacing too.

Keeping it from happening again
- Keep the door closed when you aren't using it, especially on windy days.
- Look over the cables at the bottom brackets once a month, as DASMA suggests for monthly safety checks, without touching them.
- Keep the tracks clear of debris.
- Watch for a roller that wobbles or a section that rubs, and get it looked at early.
- Put a bump stop or a parking guide in the garage if the car has clipped the track before.
Questions to ask the company
- What failed first, and what did that failure damage?
- Are you replacing both cables? What kind of cable and finish?
- Are the new rollers sealed-bearing? What do you recommend for salt air?
- Does the track need replacing or just realigning?
- Is the price all-in, including the trip?

Common questions
Can I put my garage door back on track myself?
Not if a cable is loose or the door is hanging crooked. The cables and bottom brackets are tied to the springs and carry their tension. DASMA says cables should be replaced only by a trained technician and bottom brackets adjusted only by one. Leave the door where it is and keep people and cars clear.
How long does an off-track repair take?
Raynor Door Company, a Chicago-area garage door installer, says a straightforward realignment often takes about an hour. A bent track, damaged cables or rollers, or impact damage to the sections takes longer.
My cables are rusty but not broken. Should I wait?
DASMA says to inspect the cables at the bottom brackets and that frayed or worn cables are in danger of breaking, which can cause injury. Rust that has eaten into the strands is wear. Have it checked before it snaps, especially before hurricane season.
What do cables cost to replace?
HomeAdvisor puts cable replacement at about $75 to $200, and notes that companies may discount it if the springs are replaced at the same time.
