Referral website, not the contractor. How it works

Garage door repair in Portland, TX, means the usual springs, cables and openers, plus a windstorm question when a door is replaced. To get help, send a request with the form, and choose "Portland" as your town.

Corpus Garage Door is a referral website, not a garage door company. We send your request to one independent local garage door company. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. Pricing and scheduling come from that company.

What's different about Portland

It sits on the water, in a different county. The Texas State Historical Association describes Portland as being "on a bluff overlooking Nueces Bay in southeastern San Patricio County." Its first lots went on sale in 1891, and a chartered steamer brought buyers across the bay from Corpus Christi. It grew as a bedroom community for Corpus Christi in the 1960s and 1970s, and the Census Bureau now estimates about 20,800 residents (July 2025). Being in San Patricio County rather than Nueces matters for permits, which run through Portland's own Development Services, and it's worth knowing when you talk to your insurance agent.

Wind off the bay. Portland's history is a storm history. TSHA notes hurricanes hit the town in 1916 and 1919. When Hurricane Celia struck in 1970, the National Weather Service estimated gusts of 160 mph at Portland and Odem and reported that 90 percent of Portland's homes and businesses were damaged. During Harvey in 2017, NOAA's storm records describe "widespread minor roof damage and fences blown down in Portland," and the Weather Service logged a 63 mph gust in town. The Texas Department of Insurance calls garage doors "particularly vulnerable to high winds" because of the long span of the opening they cover.

Salt reaches the bluff. FEMA's coastal corrosion bulletin says salt spray is heaviest within 300 to 3,000 feet of the shore and that faster corrosion has been measured as far as 5 to 10 miles inland, especially where wind blows in off the water. Homes near the bayfront are the most exposed; rust on springs, cables and roller bearings is worth checking for across town.

Portland's permit rules. The city says permits are required "to erect, alter, or enlarge any structure," and its list of permit types includes "Window/Siding/Door." Contractors must be registered with the city before they apply. Development Services is at 361-777-4550. Ask the company whether it's registered in Portland and whether it will pull the permit for a new door.

TWIA applies. San Patricio County is one of the 14 first-tier coastal counties in the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association's coverage area. TDI's storm-repair handout tells homeowners there to ask their insurance agent whether garage door repairs must meet the building code; inspected work that passes earns a Form WPI-8. Ask your agent or call TDI at (800) 248-6032 before replacing a door.

Before you get in touch

  • Check whether your springs are above the door or along the tracks, and look for rust or broken cable strands.
  • If a storm or vehicle damaged the door, take photos first.
  • If you're replacing the door, call your insurance agent about the windstorm question and ask the company about Portland's permit and contractor registration.
  • If your neighborhood has an HOA, check its rules on door styles and colors.
